Uptick In Sales Has Local Businessmen Eating Twice A Day Now

Despite the anxiety associated with a slumping economy, some business owners reported increased sales over the Christmas holiday. And many credit the increases to people’s interest in shopping locally. “We won’t have the hard numbers (on sales statistics) until February,” said Curtis Pickard, executive director of the Maine Merchant’s Association. “But I’ve spoken with a number of members in the last couple of weeks and received a lot of positive responses.” Pickard credits the good sales reports to two factors: Weather, and an overall uptick in consumer confidence. “It feels a little different this year,” he said during a recent telephone interview.
