BOSTON — Through everything that had gone wrong on Friday night for the Red Sox — and the list wasn’t short — they somehow got to two outs in the bottom of the ninth with the tying run at the plate. Not only that, but the man at the plate was Victor Martinez, who had already delivered two homers and five RBIs to keep his team within striking distance.
However, there would be no dramatic finish at Fenway. Martinez popped up Kevin Gregg’s 1-0 cutter to end the game. The Red Sox took an 11-9 loss to the Blue Jays in a game they trailed 10-5 and 11-5 before making Toronto sweat it out. (MLB.com, with video)
