Maine Doctor Reprimanded For Substance Abuse

AUGUSTA, ME – George E. Northrop, M.D., was reprimanded in a Consent Agreement signed with the Board of Licensure in Medicine on November 9, 2010. In the Consent Agreement, Dr. Northrop admitted the Board has sufficient evidence to find that he engaged in habitual substance abuse and unprofessional conduct. In addition, the Board fined Dr. Northrop $2,000 and Dr. Northrop agreed to withdraw his appeal of the Board’s denial of his permanent license application. Dr. Northrop practiced in North Haven and currently resides in Connecticut.

Dr. Northrop was granted an emergency license from the Board on February 15, 2008. He submitted a permanent application on May 27, 2008. On July 12, 2008 the Board learned that Dr. Northrop had entered a treatment plan and then learned that he had tested positive for alcohol on August 27, 2008. Dr. Northrop resigned his position in North Haven in September 2008. During the investigation, the Board also found that Dr. Northrop had prescribed medication for himself and obtained additional medication by prescribing for family.
