Blueberry Growers Hoping To Instill “Maine Work Ethic” In Pickers Who Walked Here From Central America

ELLSWORTH — Given the mild winter and ample rainfall, blueberry growers are anticipating a bountiful crop this year that could be the largest in more than a decade. “Right now we’re seeing an above average year in our fields,” said Todd Merrill, president of Merrill Blueberry Farms in Ellsworth. “We attribute it to good pollination weather, a mild transition from winter to spring and a lot of rain in May and June.” David Yarborough, blueberry specialist with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, said the blueberry crop could be “above average at 90 to 95 million pounds.” At 90 million pounds the harvest would be the largest since 2000, when production reached a record 110 million pounds, according to New England Agricultural Statistics.
