Peterson, put on the defensive early in his match against Cody Lightfoot of South Berwick for the New England Fights Maine state middleweight (185-pound) crown, used a stunning turnaround late in the second round to win the title belt in the main event of Saturday night’s Fight Night IV before 3,200 fans at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. “There’s no two ways around the fact that he kicked the crap out of me for pretty much every second of that fight until the end,” said Peterson. “But you just can never give up.” The bout was one of two NEF championship fights headlining that promotion’s fourth fight card of the year in Maine, with Brazilian Gil de Freitas winning its Maine state welterweight (170-pound) crown with a unanimous decision over “The” Ryan Sanders of Brewer. (read more at BangorDailyNews)

Then Joe Frazier spent the rest of his life trying to fight his way out of Ali’s shadow. That was one fight Frazier never could win. He was once a heavyweight champion, and a great one at that. Ali would say as much after Frazier knocked him down in the 15th round en route to becoming the first man to beat Ali at Madison Square Garden in March 1971. But he bore the burden of being Ali’s foil, and he paid the price. Bitter for years about the taunts his former nemesis once threw his way, Frazier only in recent times came to terms with what happened in the past and said he had forgiven Ali for everything he said. Frazier, who died Monday night after a brief battle with liver cancer at the age of 67, will forever be linked to Ali. But no one in boxing would ever dream of anointing Ali as The Greatest unless he, too, was linked to Smokin’ Joe. (LewistonSunJournal)

Rockland’s brand new roller derby league, the Rock Coast Rollers, joined what in other places is a vibrant and popular sport with its inaugural bout against the Portland-based Calamity Janes of the Maine Roller Derby league. Protected by helmets and safety gear and glowing with the charge of adrenaline, around and around the rink at Portland’s Happy Wheels they went, putting to rest any notion that full-contact sports are for boys only. Though the goal for both teams was to defend against scoring by knocking each other out of bounds or violently to the floor, the real objective in roller derby is to avoid contact and strive for finesse. If that sounds easy, try it on roller skates while picking your way through a dense pack of competitors with names like Iron Orchid and Cherry Clobber who are trying to wipe you out. “It was incredible,” said Adina Baseler of Friendship, who in the world of roller derby goes by the nickname Schrodinger’s Catfight, after Saturday’s bout. “I’m still feeling that amazing rush.” (read more at the BangorDailyNews)

The Bangor resident, also known as “The Irish Hand Grenade,” defeated Travis “Iron Chin” Coyle via a choke hold submission in the first round to highlight the 17-bout Global Fight League 13 card held before an estimated 2,600 fans at the Portland Expo. Coyle, from Denver, Colo., entered the welterweight (170-pound) match with eight wins in his last nine fights, including seven by submission, but the 38-year-old Davis finished the match in just 1 minute, 21 seconds of the 5-minute first round.
