But in early June, she found herself doing just that — in New York City, wearing the couture of Lane Bryant, Ashley Stewart and Jill Alexander at an event known as Full Figured Fashion Week. “It was just like the runways you see on TV, but for curvy people,” said Bell-Stearns, 25. “We’re curvy; we’re not fat. We’re the average woman.” Bell-Stearns, who lives in New York, decided to enter the fast-growing field of plus-size modeling in January and has been devoting all of her energy to it. She’s signed with a modeling agency and will appear today on an episode of the MTV show “MADE,” focusing on plus-size models. It’s a small part, basically as an extra. The episode focuses on another young woman, who is trying to become a plus-size model with MTV’s help. The show focuses on helping young adults transform themselves by achieving dreams or starting careers.

I last bought a pair about 15 years ago from Victoria’s Secret. True story. I loved them and I wore them out. The best part was that my husband loved them, too. “Oooh you’re wearing your overalls today,” he’d whisper provocatively. Which would send our children dashing from the room in horror. True story. As my overalls wore out, the left buckle broke. I wore them anyway with the strap dangling down the front. “That’s the ‘in’ thing,” my mother once said to someone who took notice of my sagging strap. She clearly gave me way too much credit. I don’t think there was anything about my overalls that was “in.” My buckle was just broken. (read more at BangorDailyNews, because there’s no way you can read less now)

But the chic, young duchess of Cambridge also deserves sartorial props for her hats — tiny, feathered fascinators (basically headbands with oomph), saucerlike numbers and insouciant berets. Her chic headwear — combined with retro, hat-heavy costume dramas such as “Mad Men,” “Boardwalk Empire” and “Downton Abbey” — has reignited an interest in fashions that, well, go to your head. “I’ve seen a big change in the past year, with people not thinking wearing a hat is unusual,” said Anna Fuhrman, owner of Proper Topper, Washington, D.C.’s 22-year-old temple to fedoras, cloches and more. “The royal wedding provided a push. People are also feeling braver about taking fashion risks.” (read more at Bangor Daily News)

And it’s from royalty, to boot. Julia Furtado, Miss Maine 2011, won the bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award on Thursday night in Las Vegas during the pageant’s preliminary competition. The award is bestowed by Great Britain’s Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, and honors excellence in community service, talent and physical fitness. Created in 1956, the international award seeks to help young people reach their full potential. Last year, the charity formed a partnership with the Miss America Organization. This is the first year the pageant has handed out the award. “She’s represented Maine very well,” said Miss Maine spokeswoman Audrey Findlen. (more at PortlandPressHerald)

Well, let me explain. After two rather disappointing “developments” during my girlhood years, I never paid my chest area too much attention; that is, until I reached my middle sixties. It was only then that “Mother Nature” decided to attune for her lack of attention in my youth and I awoke one fine morning only to discover that I was now “amply” endowed and that’s putting it mildly. My husband, having never been enticed by that area of the female anatomy, simply looked at me when I tried to explain the latest situation and slid off to work where he knew how to handle all sorts of “real” emergencies, praying like hell, that mine would all be over before he had to come home. I was left to ponder about what to do with my two new found treasures. Having always been a conservative dresser and a modest person, I was at a loss as to how to modify my attention grabbing mountains. I shunned my sweaters and other tight fitting outfits and I buttoned all of my blouses right to the top button no matter what the weather was. Menopausal sweat poured off my fevered brow but I still maintained my puritanical stance. Nobody was going to get anything for free and that was it!I took myself off to several local doctors, thinking that they would have some expertise in that area of the body but they weren’t any help what so ever. One checked me over and said, “Mrs. David, all I can tell you is that some women take a long time to develop.” And he promptly left the cold exam room. Another said, “Well, really, what are you complaining about?” “Some woman would give anything to have what you’ve finally gotten.” I looked at him in disbelief and then reconciled myself to the fact that men being men, they are born to think like that. I had to bite my tongue and clamp my lips shut as I slid off the cold exam table to keep from saying to him, “Well doc, how would you like it if you woke up one morning and found that your testicles were all swollen up and hanging down your legs like two grapefruits in a plastic bag!” I wanted to but I didn’t! Sometimes trends are hard to explain, but one thing is for sure, fashion can be fun. If animal hats aren’t for you, there are plenty of other ways to be bold and embrace trends this winter. The most popular outerwear accessories in Maine are all about material and functionality, and there seems to be something for everyone, from theatergoer to ski bum. Clothing designer Jessi Sader of Orono, owner of the FX Designs clothing line, travels to a trade show in Los Vegas to hear forecasts on future trends, buy textiles and share ideas with other designers. “In New England, we’re fairly functional,” Sader said. “We don’t even touch a lot of the trends — you know the pant suits and some of the bright electric colors — we just don’t do it in the wintertime here.” (read more at BangorDailyNews)

Some are forgetting traditional gifts for daughter such as jewelry and new clothes, and jumping on the breast implant bandwagon. Under the guise of giving their daughters a self-esteem lift, these parents may be setting them up for a lifetime of chronic low self-esteem. Just a few nights ago I watched a tabloid television show that featured a mother who proudly bought her teenage daughter breast implants. I guess it was a sort of grown up mommy-and-me experience as the mother also had implants. I suspect the story I watched was fairly typical. The daughter had been teased in school because of her small breasts, became highly insecure and wanted implants. Her mother obliged. I have no doubt that this mother, like many other parents, was trying to help her daughter build her self-esteem. Sadly, she has likely done the very opposite. (MagicCityMorningStar)
