Jagr, who leads the Stars in points this season, was traded Tuesday for two prospects, forwards Lane MacDermid and Cody Payne, and a conditional second-round pick in this year’s draft. The deal came five days after the Bruins thought they obtained forward Jarome Iginla from the Calgary Flames, only to learn Iginla had been traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In his first season with the Stars, the 41-year-old Jagr has 14 goals and 26 points. Brad Marchand leads the Bruins with 14 goals and Patrice Bergeron is first with 31 points. Jagr has 679 career goals. (read more at Portland Press Herald)

The NHL and the players’ association reached a tentative agreement early Sunday to end a nearly four-month-old lockout that threatened to wipe out what was left of an already abbreviated season. A marathon negotiating session that lasted more than 16 hours, stretching from Saturday afternoon until just before dawn Sunday, produced a 10-year deal. (Read more at Lewiston Sun Journal)

McCaela Prentice, 15, of Woodstock decided at 13 that she would like to learn to skate and try her hand at hockey. So she traveled to the rink at Hebron Academy for a year. She practiced the basics and then took part in some hockey scrimmages. “I’ve always been interested in hockey,” said McCaela. “After I got my skates under me, I went to Bridgton, with Western Maine Youth Hockey [a league based at Bridgton Academy].” She played defense during her first season at Bridgton. “I became a goalie by accident,” she said. “At the end of the first season, the girl playing goalie got hurt,” she said. The coaches asked her to try the net. “I ended up really liking it,” she said. She attended hockey camps in the summer to hone her skills. She does exercises to stay in shape, and also plays soccer and softball at Telstar. This past hockey season she had a total of 776 saves in 16 appearances in goal, posting a .925 save percentage. But the students lost their battle with the Maine Principals’ Association over the formation of a Deering-Portland High cooperative team, which would have provided a way for the hockey fanatics to play their senior year. The boys sued the MPA in Cumberland County Superior Court over its denial of the schools’ requests to form a merged boys team, arguing that the decision amounted to educational discrimination based on sex. At the same meeting it decided against the boys co-op team, the MPA allowed Deering and Portland to form a girls co-op team. The boys were disappointed that Justice Thomas Warren did not rule in their favor, but they were gracious in defeat. After Monday’s hearing, they said they were glad to have had a voice in the matter, thanked the parties involved and spoke of life lessons learned. (PortlandPressHerald)

Bowdoin became the first institution in NESCAC history to voluntarily vacate a NESCAC Championship following the discovery that hazing occurred at a men’s ice hockey initiation event on May 11. The revelation was a dramatic turn of fortune for a team that only three months prior had been riding high after defeating Williams to capture the program’s first-ever conference title.

What exactly happened at the initiation, however, remains unclear.

The Dean’s Office learned of the initiation on the morning of May 12 and alerted the Department of Safety and Security, which promptly launched an investigation. According to a former member of the team who agreed to speak to the Orient on the condition of anonymity, the players were notified of the investigation that evening. Dean of Student Affairs Tim Foster declined to elaborate on the exact details of the event.

Foster did report that the investigation quickly revealed that the incident “was an unambiguous case of hazing.”

College policy defines hazing as “any activity that is part of an initiation, participation, or affiliation in a group” that includes coercive, illegal, or academically compromising behavior. The Student Handbook additionally stipulates that hazing includes “encouraging or requiring a person to consume alcohol, drugs, or foreign or unusual substances.”

Former captain Kyle Shearer-Hardy ’11 wrote in an email to the Orient that “there certainly was drinking involved, but no hard alcohol. Just kegs and wine coolers…it was more of an end of year party that happens annually.” (Read the rest at the Bowdoin Orient)
