NEW YORK — A tiny book from 1640 believed to be the first ever printed in what is now the United States is going up for auction, and it could sell for as much as $30 million. Only 11 copies of the Bay Psalm Book survive in varying degrees of completeness. Members of Boston’s Old South Church have authorized the sale of one of its two copies at Sotheby’s Nov. 26. “It’s a spectacular book, arguably one of the most important books in this nation’s history,” said the Rev. Nancy Taylor, senior minister and CEO of the church, which was established in 1669. Samuel Adams was a member and Benjamin Franklin was baptized there. At one time, the church owned five copies of the 6-by-5-inch hymnal. One is now at the Library of Congress, another at Yale University and a third at Brown University. * David Ross. A back-up catcher.

* Jonny Gomes. An outfielder who is limited defensively and batted .209 against right-handed pitching last year.

* Mike Napoli. A catcher who plays first base; neither very well, we’re told. And he batted .227 last year.

Just when things couldn’t have gotten any uglier inside the Red Sox clubhouse, a breath of fresh air arrives. And Red Sox nation have Magic Johnson and the rest of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ new ownership group to thank. According to multiple media reports Saturday morning, the Red Sox and Dodgers have completed an absolute blockbuster of a deal that sends Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and Nick Punto to Los Angeles for first baseman James Loney — whose contract expires after this season — and four minor leaguers. And while two of the prospects coming to the Red Sox may provide future pitching help, surely the most important part of the deal to the folks at Yawkey Way is the salary dump. The Red Sox are due to save more than a quarter-billion dollars in payroll from the trade — money they conceivably can use to rebuild a franchise needing a character overhaul. BOSTON (AP) — Fenway Park has been kind to Clay Buchholz the past two seasons. It has been downright cruel this year to the hometown Boston Red Sox, though, and that trouble has now caught up to Buchholz, too. The Los Angeles Angels tagged the right-hander for seven runs and 12 hits in a 7-3 win Wednesday night over the Red Sox, who lost their third straight and for the sixth time in eight games. Boston, 29-36 at home, is looking to avoid its first losing season at Fenway since 1997. “It’s different for me, being here the last four or five years and always winning,” Buchholz said. “I think it’s a little bit different for everybody. You expect to play well everywhere, especially at home, knowing that it’s sold out every time we play here. It’s frustrating that it hasn’t been going the way we want it to go. Augusta, Maine – It is opening day for the Red Sox 2012 season and for the Maine Office of Tourism’s new radio advertising campaign on the Red Sox Radio Network.

The campaign begins April 5 running through September and includes one 30-second spot during each of the 162 games; including a live in-game read of featured Maine events as well as a partial sponsorship of a pitching change where the 30-second spot will run.

“Having a portion of the advertising campaign start this early and run continuously in key markets throughout the season is a new strategy for us. In addition, the Red Sox Radio Network has very strong coverage throughout our primary target market of New England,” said Carolann Ouellette, director of the Maine Office of Tourism.

Russell Walters, president of Northern Outdoors and representative from the Kennebec Valley Tourism Council agrees. “The Red Sox Radio campaign presents an innovative opportunity to deliver a summer-long series of messages highlighting unique and exciting Maine getaways to a loyal audience of listeners who have a strong connection to New England.”

The network consists of nearly 70 stations, giving Maine more than 11,000 spots running during the regular baseball season. With just the 30 second spots alone, not counting the pitching change spots, the Maine ad will be heard nearly 38 million times by a quarter of a million people.

“This looks like a home run for the Maine Office of Tourism with its innovative and creative marketing promo on Red Sox radio stations. Maine should score big by advertising the benefits of visiting the state not only during the summer months but our shoulder seasons as well,” said James Harmon, executive director of the Old Orchard Beach Chamber of Commerce.

The Red Sox Radio Network program is just one part of the newly integrated marketing campaign which consists of a broad spectrum of media that will be in the marketplace year round.

BANGOR, Maine — While community volunteers were staging a benefit for area nonprofits Sunday afternoon, an unidentified man was in their changing room helping himself to their belongings. The Bangor Police Department on Monday released a security camera image of the thief in the hopes someone might recognize him and provide information that would enable authorities to determine the man’s identity. The thefts occurred during Sunday’s performance of “Music from the Movies,” the Rotary Club of Bangor’s seventh annual Music Off Broadway show, which this year will benefit the Charlotte White Center, the Hammond Street Senior Center, the Phillips-Strickland House, Camp Jordan and the Gifts of Music. BOSTON (AP) — The Terry Francona era is over in Boston. The manager who led the Red Sox to their first World Series championship in 86 years is out after one of the worst months in club history. In a joint statement released on Friday, the Red Sox announced they will not pick up the option on Francona’s contract for a ninth year in the wake of the team’s September collapse in which they blew a nine-game lead in the AL wild-card race. Owners John Henry, Tom Werner, and Larry Lucchino acknowledged a change was needed and thanked Francona, who led the franchise to titles in 2004 and 2007. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.— Former World Series MVP Manny Ramirez was released from jail today after authorities arrested him for allegedly slapping his wife during a dispute at their South Florida home. Ramirez was released from the Broward County Jail on $2,500 bail on the domestic battery charge. Broward Circuit Judge Jon Hurley ordered that he have no direct contact with his wife. Broward sheriff’s officials say 39-year-old Ramirez was arguing with his wife, Juliana, Monday afternoon when he slapped her face, causing her to hit her head on their bed’s headboard.
